Ingredients

For the Casserole
  • 1 loaf French bread cut into cubes (about 10-12 cups)
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup butter melted
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped pecans optional

Equipment

  • 9x13 inch baking dish
  • Large Mixing Bowl
  • Whisk
  • Measuring cups and spoons
  • Plastic Wrap
  • Oven Mitts
  • Spatula

Method

  1. Step 1: Start by greasing a 9x13-inch baking dish with butter or cooking spray.
  2. Step 2: Next, take your loaf of French bread and cut it into cubes. Place the cubed bread evenly in the prepared baking dish.
  3. Step 3: In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, heavy cream, granulated sugar, vanilla extract, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt until well combined.
  4. Step 4: Pour the egg mixture over the bread cubes, making sure every piece is coated. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  5. Step 5: The next morning, preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  6. Step 6: In a separate bowl, mix the melted butter and brown sugar until well combined. Drizzle this mixture over the bread casserole.
  7. Step 7: If desired, sprinkle chopped pecans on top of the brown sugar mixture.
  8. Step 8: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 45-50 minutes until set and golden brown on top.
  9. Step 9: Once baked, remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to cool slightly before serving.
