- Cook pasta according to package directions until al dente. Reserve about 1/2 cup of pasta water before draining.
- While pasta cooks, heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add minced garlic and red pepper flakes (if using) to the skillet and cook for about 1 minute, or until fragrant. Be careful not to burn the garlic.
- Pour in the crushed tomatoes, salt, and pepper. Bring to a simmer and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add the cooked pasta to the skillet and toss to coat with the sauce. Add a little pasta water if needed to loosen the sauce.
- Stir in the Parmesan cheese until melted and creamy.
- Serve immediately, garnished with fresh basil leaves (if using).
Notes
For a richer flavor, use high-quality olive oil and Parmesan cheese. Feel free to add other vegetables like spinach or mushrooms to the sauce. A pinch of sugar can help balance the acidity of the tomatoes if desired.
